What are Antinuclear Antibodies?

Antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) are antibodies that are directed against structures within the nucleus of a cell. These antibodies are often found in people with autoimmune disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. A positive ANA test result may indicate the presence of an autoimmune disorder, but it is not diagnostic on its own.
